The George Washington Memorial Arboretum was once a farm field owned by the Johnson family (of the Johnson Ferry House). Prior to that the land was part of the vast Lenapehoking lands of the Lenape people.

The eight-acre Arboretum, in the southeast corner of the Washington Crossing State Park, was created by Howard Fiske in 1925 as part of the Park’s master plan.

Charles Lathrop Pack and his son Arthur, prominent timbermen from Lakewood, NJ, donated the Arboretum on the occasion of George Washington’s Bicentennial birthday celebration. The dedication was held on May 19, 1932.

Example of our tree tags, installed following recommendations for Accessible Exhibition Design.

A thousand trees and fourteen hundred shrubs consisting of over 130 species native to New Jersey were planted. A bronze plaque commemorating the creation of the Arboretum can be found on a large stone in a shady spot towards the southeast corner.

Many of trees planted in 1932 still exist. Most prominent of the surviving species are Northern red oak and Sugar maple trees. Also surviving along Sullivan's Drive are several White oak trees planted in 1931 and 1932, including the Amos Scudder tree. (Amos Scudder was a guide for Washington's troops on the march to Trenton.)

In 2022, Soledad Cepada from the Rutger’s Environmental Steward Program, in collaboration with the WCPA and State Park staff, identified and tagged over 100 of the Arboretum’s specimens. Her work is catalogued here with a map and a list (including GPS coordinates) of those trees, which can be used to create a tour or a scavenger hunt of the entire Arboretum.

Our interactive Google Map gives a detailed look at each tree and its location! Click the points for more information on each tree, including its exact GPS coordinates.
