This tree is well known for its elongated leaflets and extremely hard ball shaped husks. The wood of the tree is one of the best for furniture making. Its nut provides a nutritious meal for wildlife once the hard husk is cracked open.

This is a small tree but makes its presence well-known in the spring, with a profusion of white flowers. Red berries come next to the delight of birds.

This distinctive tree with its lacy leaflets is the American version of a coffee tree. The large seeds were roasted as a substitute for the real thing by early settlers.

This is a small leaf maple with red stems and red leaves in the fall. The tree is widely planted in New Jersey since it is well adapted to wet and dry soils.

New Jersey's state tree is well-represented in the arboretum. It has very large  leaves and the largest acorns of the oaks. It is a long-lived  tree with many of the species planted in 1932 now approaching  100 years old.

A favorite tree among those who like maple syrup and spectacular fall foliage. Climate change threatens the longevity of these trees , which are more suited to a New England locale.

In New Jersey this is a shrub, but in the South it grows more like a tree.  It has creamy white flowers when in bloom during early summer.  The shrub is often found in lowlands or wet areas. Several shrubs were planted by the Garden Club of Trenton.

This tree is easily recognized by its star-shaped leaves. In the fall, this tree ranks near the top in brilliant red color. Another distinguishing feature in the fall is its profusion of prickly little balls.

This is one of the largest trees in diameter in the arboretum. The peeling bark is a distinctive feature of this tree as are the seed balls which often cling to branches in winter.

Of all the oaks, this tree is the longest-lived and largest in diameter. It is not unusual to find White oaks over two hundred years old. The tree gets its name from its whitish bark. The rounded leaf tips makes this oak easy to distinguish from other oaks.

This conifer can be found towering above deciduous trees on the fringes of the arboretum. It is the tallest tree in the arboretum, exceeding 100 feet. It is often planted in parks and unless planted is not found in forested areas in New Jersey due to the relatively warm climate. Its long, fine needles are soft to the touch, unlike other conifer needles.

The name of this tree reflects the willow-like shape of its leaf. Unlike the willow tree, the branches do not droop. The Garden Club of Trenton planted several of these trees in 2013.
